06 · Brand identity

An identity your team can apply without asking a designer.

  • Most identity work ends at a logo file. What decides whether it holds is everything after: who applies it, on what, and whether the rules survive a signwriter, a printer and a project manager in a hurry.

The constraint

You are being judged before anyone reads a word.

The first thing a buyer does with your brand is not read it. They form an impression fast, then look for evidence to confirm what they already decided. That is not an argument for spending more on a logo. It is an argument for being deliberate about the small number of surfaces where the impression actually forms.

Fifty milliseconds

Visual appeal is judged in about 50 milliseconds, and those judgements correlate closely with what people report after half a second. Lindgaard, Fernandes, Dudek and Brown, Behaviour & Information Technology, 2006.

It is what gets mentioned

Of 2,684 people assessing the credibility of live websites, design look appeared in 46.1% of comments, more often than any other factor. Fogg et al., Stanford, 2003. That is 46.1% of comments, not of people.

And it only earns the look

73% of 3,484 B2B decision-makers say substantive content is a more trustworthy basis for judging capability than marketing material. Edelman and LinkedIn, 2024. An identity gets you looked at. It does not get you believed.

Sample

Where an identity actually gets used.

An identity is not handed to a designer. It is handed to whoever is quoting on Tuesday, the signwriter measuring a shopfront, and the supplier printing forty polo shirts. Two of those surfaces you control. The rest you do not.

This is the shape of it, and where a logo-only handover comes apart.

Fit

When new identity is the answer, and when it is not.

Identity work is worth doing when the brand is actively costing you work. It is worth postponing when the problem sits somewhere behind it, which is more often than anyone selling a rebrand will tell you.

Worth doing when

  • The work you win now is not the work the brand describes.
  • Your logo exists in four versions and nobody knows which is current.
  • You are quoting against firms half your size and looking smaller than them.
  • Applying the brand to anything requires asking one particular person.

Worth postponing when

  • The enquiry lands in an inbox nobody has been made responsible for.
  • Nothing has been photographed, so there is nothing to apply a brand to.
  • You want it finished before a trade show next month.
  • The last rebrand was two years ago and the brief has not changed.
Scope

What actually moves the number.

Not the number of logo options. Four things move the cost of identity work, and only one of them is drawing.

How many surfaces it has to live on
A logo for a website and a logo for a fleet of vehicles are different pieces of work. Physical application brings vector artwork, exact colour matching for print and vinyl, minimum sizes, and a version that survives being embroidered. Digital-only sits at the cheaper end of this by a wide margin.
Whether anything gets manufactured
The moment signage, vehicle wraps, uniforms or printed documents are involved, the identity needs specifications rather than preferences, and somebody has to check the proofs. That is real time, and it is where most of the risk sits.
How many people apply it without you
If two people use the brand, a short set of rules is enough. If fifteen do, across sales, operations and a supplier or two, it needs templates that make the wrong thing hard to do. Guidelines nobody opens are a cost, not a deliverable.
Whether the name and positioning are settled
Design cannot resolve an unsettled argument about what the company is. If that conversation is still open it happens first, and it is the cheapest part of the project to get right.
Proof

One we built, and what it had to prove.

Hua Kwang Interior is a Singapore interior design and renovation company. The work quality was not the problem. The brand was: the logo had drifted into several inconsistent versions, and the digital presence read as less established than the business actually was, in a category where clients shortlist on appearance before they pick up a phone.

Identity and website were rebuilt together, so the brand arrived somewhere it could be seen working rather than as a folder of files. See the identity work, or the website that carries it.

One mark, not four

The identity resolves to a single primary mark with defined variants for the places it has to fit, instead of four files that drifted apart.

Applied, not delivered

Identity and website were built together, so the brand shipped somewhere it could be seen working rather than as a specification nobody had tested.

Built for a saturated category

Renovation is a category where buyers shortlist on appearance before they call. Looking as established as you are is the job.

Working from overseas

Clients who will never visit the studio have been normal here since 2023. Video calls, decisions in writing, and a scope that says what is signed off at each stage.

Questions

What people ask before they commit.

The ones that come up most, answered plainly.

Do I need a rebrand, or just a new logo?
Usually neither on its own. If the mark is fine and the problem is that nobody applies it consistently, what you need is rules and templates, which is far cheaper. If the business has changed and the brand describes the old one, a new mark is the smaller half of the work. The diagnostic answers this before anybody quotes.
What do we actually receive at the end?
Working files in the formats each supplier needs, including vector artwork for anything manufactured. Colour specified for screen and for print. Typography with named weights and where each one is used. Rules covering minimum size, clear space and what not to do. Where it applies, templates for the documents that go out most often.
Can you work from our existing logo?
Often, and sometimes it is the right answer. A mark people already recognise is an asset, and rebuilding it properly is cheaper and less disruptive than replacing it. If that is the case here, we will say so rather than sell you a rebrand.
How many rounds of revisions?
Unlimited within each phase. The caveat is honest: revisions after a phase has been approved extend the timeline, so it pays to consolidate feedback per phase rather than sending it back in pieces.
Do you do naming?
Yes, though it is a separate conversation and it happens before any design. Naming while designing produces a mark built around a name that has not survived a trademark check.
We are in engineering, not a design industry. Does any of this apply?
Most of who we build for is marine, engineering, manufacturing and professional services. Buyers in those categories check you before they call, and they are comparing you against firms that look more established than they are. That is the entire argument.
